A Guide To Helping Your Children Cope With Moving

Moving is one of the most stressful things a person can do. For kids, moving brings additional challenges. As a parent or guardian, it's up to you to help your children through this difficult time. Here are some tips for helping your children cope with moving:

Don't Spring The News On Them

Tell them in advance. Don't spring the news on your kids, especially if they are younger. You want to be able to tell them that you are moving and don't want to leave them behind. The best way to do this is by explaining it as a change, not necessarily a relocation. This can help prepare your children for the transition and give them time to process what is happening before it happens. If possible, discuss with your kids where you will be moving and why so that you can have an open conversation about why the move is necessary before relocating everyone across town or state lines.

Let Them Know That It's Not Their Fault

Your child might feel like they did something wrong if you guys are moving away from family and friends because of work or school obligations; therefore, let them know that they didn't do anything wrong! It's just one thing that sometimes happens in life - just like Mommy had her first job outside the home when she was growing up or Daddy having his first job out of the country when he was growing up (or now). Remembering these moments from our past helps create empathy within ourselves towards others' experiences, making us more loving people overall.

Find Positives In The Move

Your move will be hard on your kids, but it's possible to find the positives in it. Maybe you'll get a bigger house or a better school district with smaller class sizes. Maybe you'll be closer to work, so you can get home earlier and spend more time with your family. Or maybe the move will give them an opportunity to try new things—a new sport or hobby, for example. Or perhaps they'll make new friends that become close friends for life!

Be Present During The Move

Being present during the move is important. Be there for them as they deal with their feelings, and be available to help. You can't take away their pain, but you can be a good listener and provide support.
Be patient with your children if they act out or get angry about having to move. Try not to take it personally if they lash out at you because this behavior is normal for young children going through such an emotional time in their lives.
Understand that your kids may need extra attention to adjust well to their new home and school environment. If possible, try spending some extra time together after school or on weekends so that they feel comfortable sharing how they feel about moving back into "their old house" with friends who have moved away already or into an unfamiliar place where there aren't any familiar faces yet beside yours (which might make things even harder). You could also take advantage of this opportunity by teaching them new skills like cooking or cleaning up after themselves around the house since these are essential life skills everyone needs regardless of whether we live in our own homes or not!

Let Your Children Help

It's hard to let your kids do something you know they're not ready for, but it's important that they feel like they are part of the process. Your kids will be excited about their new home, school, and neighborhood if they can help pick out items for their room or even decorate it. They can also make friends by helping others move more positively than just "getting in the way." Letting them help will also teach them what needs to be done and give them confidence when moving day comes around since they'll have experience packing their toys and clothes before packing up everything else!
