You've packed up all your belongings, and the professional packers are ready to load them onto the truck. You've done your research and picked a reputable moving company with good reviews, but can you double-check that they're taking care of everything correctly?
Luckily for those of us who are not professional packers, someone out there has moved everything from the kitchen sink to their entire wardrobe: The professional mover. But even though they have a lot of experience packing up your items and moving them across town or an ocean, sometimes even professional movers can't help but get tired of certain things. So what items would professionals never pack for people? These are just a few examples:
Liquids and toiletries
Anything with a fragrance is a no-no for the moving van. No one wants to be inhaling someone else's perfume or cologne, let alone aftershave. And if you've got a medicine cabinet full of prescription bottles, you should pack them yourself or make sure they're well protected from breakage. It's also important to consider whether any of these items are flammable.
If you have any liquids in your home to move—like shampoo, conditioner, or body wash—you should always double-check with your professional mover beforehand so he can give you options on how best to pack them safely and securely during transport.
Breakables
Packers are trained to pack breakables with various methods, but there are some things they won't do. If you have dishes, glassware, or ceramics that you want packing in your moving truck, make sure you do it yourself or ask someone else if they can help out. Packing these items can be tricky because movers have limited space in the truck and no way of knowing where everything will fit best without an outside expert telling them where to put each piece of fragile goods.
Magnets
You may think that magnets would be easy to pack, but they are another type of breakable thing that movers typically leave up to their customers because they need specific packing materials and tools that aren't usually provided by moving companies.
Clothing and bedding
Clothing and bedding are too important to give to someone else to pack. Your clothes are the foundation of your wardrobe, and your sheets should be soft and comfortable. If you're going on a vacation or moving into a new place, chances are your wardrobe will change significantly—so it makes sense that you would want to pack these items yourself. This way, you can ensure that every item in your bag is exactly what you need for your trip or new home.
It's also important to consider how delicate clothing and bedding can be when packed by a professional mover. While most companies take great care with their clients' belongings during the packing process, the sheer size of many closets makes it difficult for even an experienced packer not to damage clothing while folding them inside boxes (and it can be easy enough for any member of the team who may not know how best handle certain items). For example: if someone doesn't know how much pressure they should apply when folding shirts or pants into boxes, this could result in creases being folded inappropriately (which could affect how well they fit once worn).
Valuables and Documents
While a professional packer may be able to handle your valuables, it's best to keep them out of their hands. Valuable items include jewelry, art, antiques, and collectibles. If you have any of these things, it's best to pack them yourself so that they are not damaged in transit or lost during the packing process.
Documents like passports and birth certificates should also not be given to a professional packer unless you can make arrangements with that person beforehand. In general, if there is any chance that an item could be damaged or lost while being packed by someone other than yourself, then it's probably best not to entrust those items with anyone else but yourself!
